Andrei, could you tell us why you decided to study at Vatel?

I chose Vatel Switzerland because I wanted a well-rounded education with the opportunity to practice within the Hotel Campus in various departments before I could find my calling. I graduated from Vatel Switzerland with a Bachelor’s degree in 2017. 

So you would say that Vatel lived up to your expectations? 

Definitely, Vatel provided with unique experiences and opportunities from which I benefited a lot.

Where did you do your practical application work and internships? 

1st Internship – Grand Hotel du Lac, Vevey, Switzerland – F&B Cross Training (fine dining service in Michelin and Gault Millau Awarded restaurant, Banquet, Bar service, In room dinning)

2nd Internship – Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues, Geneva, Switzerland – F&B Commis, Il Lago (fine dine service in Michelin Awarded restaurant)

Can you tell us in detail what you do then? 

Both internships were very tough, as the expectation for a 5* property / awarded restaurant are very high.

I started as a Commis, delivering the trays with food to the restaurant, clearing the tables, polishing, cleaning the restaurant after each service, making sure the back office is always spotless, being the main bridge between the kitchen and restaurant service.

In the hospitality industry, product knowledge is a must. I had to study all the menus, prices, hotel details / history, outlets timings, wines (origin/grapes/ taste/ food pairing), cheese trolley (provenience, age, taste, wine pairing) and even the small details such as the water(brands, the river from where the specific water is brought, nitrate levels, percentage of Calcium/Magnesium/Sodium).

After I was able to prove myself, they have given me more responsibility such as taking orders and serving alone a specific part of the restaurant.

It was really an incredible journey from where I was able to gain so much experience.    

What do you think of Vatel opening in Bahrain? 

I was really excited to find out that Vatel has opened its door in Middle East. It is a really a demanding sector in UAE nowadays.

How will you qualify the Hospitality & Tourism sector in the Middle East? 

Tourism sector is critical for Middle East as it contributing to the economic future.  It has grown significantly in the past decade and you can see that there is plenty of demand and that authorities are trying to build new attractions every year in order keep a stable tourism.

Would you like to add anything? 

After Vatel, I was able to easily kick start my career in Sales.

I started in Fairmont Dubai as an intern in Catering and Convention Services. Quickly I have been taken as a full time Coordinator, Groups & Events. After 1 and a half year in Fairmont Dubai, I had the opportunity to change the property from a business hotel to a brand-new breach resort hotel as a Sales Executive, MICE segment in Rixos Saadiyat Island Abu Dhabi.

The entire experience was an amazing one and I really enjoyed every bit of it.
